Robert Irwin had an awkward moment on breakfast television on Wednesday when a snake got a little too close to his shorts.

The khaki-clad wildlife warrior, 18, was handling a pair of diamond pythons during a segment with Sunrise weatherman Sam Mac when things took an unexpected turn.

Robert gave a nervous-looking Sam one of the reptiles to hold during the live cross from Australia Zoo, on Queensland’s Sunshine Coast.

Robert warned one of the snakes was a little ‘bit bitey’ as it slithered down towards his crotch.

‘Where’s it heading down there?’ Sam asked as the snake’s head peered south.

Sunrise hosts Natalie Barr and David Koch looked shocked back in the studio before bursting into laughter at the awkward moment.

David said was he ‘wasn’t sure’ what was going on, but Robert seemed to have the situation under control.

Ever the professional, the teenage photographer shrugged it off and lifted the snake’s head back towards his chest.

He went on to describe the snakes as ‘really inquisitive’ and ‘smart’, saying: ‘Diamond pythons are beautiful, aren’t they?’

Sunrise viewers were quick to comment on the funny moment on Instagram.

‘He’s heading downstairs. Watch out!’ one fan wrote, while another added: ‘So funny.’

A third commented: ‘Hard pass. Love the Irwins… not so much snakes.’

Robert, who is the son of the late conservationist Steve Irwin, known to the world as the ‘Crocodile Hunter’, has been doing the media rounds this month.

He recently said he feels closest to his father – who died in a freak accident on September 4, 2006, at the age of 44 – while feeding crocodiles at Australia Zoo.

‘It’s an honour and most of all I feel closest to Dad [Steve Irwin] when I’m feeding the crocodiles,’ he told ABC’s One Plus One last week.

‘You can feel his presence,’ he added.
